First, identify what is actually shaking

Start by checking whether the whole room shakes or only the object in your paw. A whole-world wobble when you turn your head is a different problem from a held object that jitters. Stand still in an open area, keep both hands down, and turn your head slowly. Then repeat the test while holding one object. This short check prevents controller tracking problems from being mistaken for camera jitter.

  • World moves with head rotation: test runtime and refresh rate first.
  • Only held objects shake: check controller tracking, lighting, and batteries.
  • Shake begins near a wall or boundary: recenter and confirm floor height.
  • Only one save or room is affected: reproduce once in a clean session.

Use a one-change Steam VR test order

Install the current game update and restart the headset software before tuning anything. Confirm that only the intended OpenXR runtime is active, return the headset to a normal supported refresh rate, and launch I Am Cat without overlays you do not need. Test the same quiet room for a minute after each change.

Do not lower resolution, switch runtimes, change refresh rate, and reinstall the game in one attempt. A large bundle of changes may hide the cause and makes it harder to know which setting should stay.

  • 1. Update the game and headset software.
  • 2. Select one OpenXR runtime.
  • 3. Test a standard refresh rate.
  • 4. Disable optional overlays for one launch.
  • 5. Change one graphics option only if the shake remains.

Separate performance stutter from tracking jitter

Low or uneven frame delivery can feel like camera shake, especially during quick turns. Repeat the test while facing a simple part of the room, then compare it with a busy view. If the problem grows with scene complexity, work through performance settings. If it appears in an empty view and follows your physical movement, focus on runtime and tracking instead.

  • Performance pattern: worse in busy scenes or during frame drops.
  • Tracking pattern: changes with room lighting, boundary, or controller visibility.
  • Runtime pattern: appears immediately and consistently after launch.

If you are not on Steam VR

Steam patches have addressed performance, high-refresh-rate, and camera jitter, but those fixes do not apply to every headset. Use the general known-issues guide for Quest or PS VR2 instead of copying Steam runtime steps.

What to include when asking for help

Write down the headset model, active OpenXR runtime, refresh rate, graphics card, visible game build, affected save or room, and the shortest steps that trigger the shake. Also say whether the world, hands, or only held objects move unexpectedly.

  • Include whether a clean save changes the result.
  • Say whether the world, hands, or held objects shake.
  • List only the changes you actually tested.
